Description

View

After the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire, the Congress of Altendresden in 1815 was supposed to find a new emperor, but none of the present lords could muster enough powerful supporters behind them. Therefore, a German Confederation should be founded, which as a group of states should maintain a kind of German unity as a transitional solution. Shortly thereafter, economic alliances have formed within the Confederation. The most dominant among the alliances were the PRUS Commercial Union, the Central German Customs-Union (Zd-Zv), and the Trade Union of Bavaria and Wurtemberg (HBW). The economic success of Saxony under King Augustus I. was quickly mirrored in a success of the Central German Customs-Union, which soon led to a unification of the Zd-Zv and the HBW to the German Customs-Union. The ensuing economic isolation of PRUS quickly led to financial difficulties in Prussia. At the same time King Augustus I. was able to navigate himself within the German Customs Union into a central position. With the economical and political strength of the German Customs-Union the Holy Empire of German States with its new Emperor Augustus I. was proclaimed. This received support of nearly all the principalities and kingdoms of Germany. Prussia has spoken out against it, but has had to yield because of its weakened position and the impending threat of war in the case of non-compliance.
