RE: Obama or McCain?
well, each state is responsible for their own voter registration. So people can get a drivers license in one state, move to another state, apply to vote, and that state wouldn't know if they were a citizen or not. So if illegal immigrants can get a drivers license they can use that as a form of identification and register to vote. Illegal immigrants only run into problems when they need to use a social security number. But identity theft often solves that problem as well.
McCain is unusual for a Republican. He often pursues a liberal line in domestic politics, but is still considered to be strong on national defense issues as well. He also openly opposed Bush on the proposal to tortue terrorism suspects, and he also said the Bush-tax cuts gave too much to the rich. He still voted for the tax-cuts, but campaigned for a reformed version which would have given more to the middle-class and less to the rich. But he is also in favor of staying in Iraq until a final victory is won. I guess that in some ways he is ultra-liberal on some issues, and ultra-conservative on others.

RE: Obama or McCain?
yeah i can see the logic in that. or lack thereof.
other question: what is the position of obama (and clinton) toward iran? do they support invasion/bombing/aggressive policy? or are they on a more peaceful line?

Obama is quite aggressive towards Iran. Perhaps due to his religiousness, but he has consistently said he would use force to keep Iran from interfering in Iraq. Otherwise, he would use "aggressive diplomacy" to affect change in Iran. But Obama’s foreign affairs knowledge is almost zero, so if elected, it mould most likely be his Secretary of State determining policy towards Iran.
Clinton is more knowledgeable than Obama on foreign policy, but not by much. She supports the typical US foreign policy towards Iran that “all options are on the table” which means war is a possibility. I would guess she would use economic sanctions against Iran first.
The only other insight I can offer is that Clinton voted to declare Iran’s Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization which could be used as a pretext for war. Obama missed the vote.

RE: Obama or McCain?
But what troubles me more than anything is that Ann Coulter endorsed him. For those that don't know she is one of the most radical conservatives in America who looks like this: She says thing like "we should invade Islamic countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." and "Congress could pass a law tomorrow requiring that all aliens from Arabic countries leave." So when I see Coulter supporting him, I'm worried that Obama is just as much as a Christian fundamentalist as Bush.
What on earth? That's a straight-out lie.

What part are you referring to? Nothing I said is a lie.
Coulter has said lots of disturbing things. If you don't believe me, take your pick of hundreds of clips on the web:
Coulter Clip #1
Coulter Clip #2
Coulter has changed her position (no surprise there) and she is supporting Clinton as she now sees her as more conservative than McCain or Obama. Her support was brief for Obama, but if he gets the nomination over Clinton, she would certainly support him again.
Coulter Supports Clinton
Obama's extreme religiousness is very troubling to me. From Oprah Winfrey describing him in messiah-like terms as "the one" and his campaign brochures describing him as a "committed Christian" and that he will let prayer lead him in the White House. Sounds exactly like George W. Bush rhetoric to me. Religion should be left at the door of any political office. Period.

Uh, I completely disagree with Coulter's views (don't worry, I'm sane ), but this whole "I support Hillary/Obama" business is just grandstanding on Coulter's part. She's not sincerely endorsing them, nor saying they would make good presidents. Furthermore, you're using guilt by association; just because an extremist says she supporters a candidate for loony reason does not mean that said candidate supports the rationale the supporter uses or the views of the supporter herself.

RE: Obama or McCain?
She's simply saying that they're better than McCain. I dislike all the candidates, but I'd prefer Clinton or Obama to him as well. He seems like a typical multiculturalist American 'patriot'. He's got a Bangladeshi adopted daughter, he votes for granting amnesty to illegal immigrants, he promises to "beat the shit" out of journalists he dislikes, and he wants to replace Russia with India and Brazil, of all countries, in the G8.
The prospects with Clinton and Obama are grim, but at least their actions would be more or less explainable by the overall views of their party.

RE: Obama or McCain?
Well, in any case I am very curious how he would manage the job as President. Unfortunately the economic situation, left by the Bush-regime, is not an easy initial position
