The problem that I as european see is that if you choose to tax the american people only with a sales tax than everyone of the american poeple will spent the same percentage of their income on that tax.
The millionaire will spend the same percentage as the barkeeper, but the barkeeper has to spend the majority of his income on living costs, the millionaire don't.
The millionaire can reinvest a larger percentage of his income, the barkeeper will be very lucky if he can invest anything at all, because the living costs are the same, so the millionaire will become richer and richer, but the barkeeper will have problems to not get poorer thanks to inflation.

But the system we have now is much worse than the proposed fairtax. The rich are given a lot of exemptions. In this manner, everyone pays the same. I think it'll allow more people to become rich.

Maybe that's the difference: My first goal is to allow less people to be poor. Allowing more people to become rich is just the second goal.

RE: FairTax Poll

our current tax system taxes those that make more money more than those that make less, therefore there is no incentive for the poor to go out and work multiple jobs. they begin to rely on the gov't to do everything for them. this will hopefully cause more poor people to get second jobs and stop relying on the gov't to buy their groceries for them.

It is probably because they dont want to work 50+ hours a week for lousy payment... Before you judge such people, try doing such jobs yourself for a while. Or at least spend some time seriously listening to people doing them.

As Hemothep already pointed out, people with a smaller income spend (relatively) more of their money for buying necessary goods. So in fact, concentrating on sales taxes results in higher relative taxes for the poor and lower for the rich. Suspect

i work for delta air lines for very little pay lifting everyones heavy ass bags thousands of times a day. i have worked in grocey stores and restraunts as well. i know the meaning of hard work. i work 3 jobs grew up in a house with both parents working multiple jobs and never once did we use government assistance. now both parents make good money, my dad makes a little over $200,000 a year and my mom is making about $60,000 a year. they showed what hard work does for you. i was saying there are too many people that dont want to work because they fell they are entitled to the gov't's money.

RE: FairTax Poll

this is what i got back in email after writing to my congressman about the fairtax.

Dear Jacob :

Thank you for writing to express your support for tax reform. I appreciate hearing your support for this issue.

I understand my constituents' concerns regarding America 's tax system. I believe that the current income tax system is unfair, costly and filled with special interest exemptions not available to average Americans. Countless hours are spent filing just a basic 1040 form. I do believe there should be a simplification in the filing process. Americans spend countless hours perusing through legal jargon and indecipherable rules only to be bombarded with paperwork that seems unending. The complexity of the tax code also causes disparities between tax filers. For example, two Americans that earn similar incomes can pay wildly varying taxes depending on thousands of tax situations. I believe our tax system needs reform, but coming to a consensus on how to approach such a massive undertaking will take time and compromise. However, I am strongly in support of eliminating the marriage penalty and repealing the death tax as soon as possible.

As you may know, Congressman John Linder introduced H.R. 25, the Fair Tax Act of 2007. This bill would repeal the income tax , employment tax , estate and gift tax, as well as re-designate the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as the Internal Revenue Code of 2007. It would impose a national sales tax on the use or consumption in the United States of taxable property or services and would also set the sales tax rate at 23 percent in 2009, with adjustments to the rate in subsequent years. The Fair Tax Act of 2007 would also grant states the primary authority for the collection of sales tax revenues and the remittance of such revenues to the treasury. H.R. 25 is currently pending in the House Ways and Means Committee, and rest assured, I will keep your thoughts in mind when considering this bill.

Recently, with my support the House of Representatives passed an Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) relief bill (H.R. 3996) which would provide for $50 billion in tax relief to some 23 million families . The 13th Congressional District alone had some 2 , 237 AMT returns filed in 2005 and projected returns for 2007 were at 23,725, a difference of 21,488 (equal to a 961% increase). This bill would not further burden the American economy but instead, strengthen it. The AMT was put in place to ensure that the wealthiest families did not escape paying their taxes altogether. It has grown to be such a problem that it now threatens teachers and firefighters. The bottom line is I will continue to look into ways to simplify our tax code and help Americans keep more of their hard.

Again, thank you for sharing your views with me. I hope you will continue to give me the benefit of your opinion in the future. In addition, I encourage you to visit my website at http://davidscott.house.gov, where you can view the latest news and obtain information on issue and legislation that is important to you. You can also sign up for my electronic newsletter, and receive periodic updates on my activities as your representative in Washington . I thank you again for contacting me, and I look forward to continuing to serve you.

Sincerely,

David Scott

Member of Congress

RE: FairTax Poll

23% on what I buy is much better than the 32% taken out of my paychecks!

Then again, I do have concerns like those above that the poor and middle-class will still be burdened. I think that Congress needs to think this through and come to a compromise.

Yes, for you it's better. But for those with a low income or even no income it is much harder than for those with a high income.

RE: FairTax Poll

look i have 3 jobs only one has any taxes taken out of the checks. i only make about $16K/year, at my taxed job. so therefore i have seen how much i lose out of those checks. it hurts, the gov't takes a full month worth of gas money and then some out of my checks. i would be hurting if i dint have the other jobs and everyone i work with that i have talked with about the fairtax love the idea have actually receiving their ful paychecks. you cant talk about it until you have spoken with those that it will affect the most.
