I wonder too. It tells me I'm either banned, or un-activated, when I try to change my avatar.

It is not possible to change the avatar as basic user.

Strange.. I saw some basic users with a self-selected avatar.
How do I rank up in another group then?

Probably they are former premium users, whose status finished. Now they are basic users again - however the Avatar remains valid.

(For rank up to premium have a look at 'Upgrade' on the left menu.)
