Republic of

Kalifornia

Overview
The affairs of state of Kalifornia, formerly USA, were taken over by the regent Donovius in Winter 1989. Observers classify the very little state as progressive social liberal party-democracy, known for its high net income and the low crime rate.
Most of the ingenious and reasonable citizens are discontent with the circumstances. They have the reputation to be hedonistic and fair and enjoy excellent health. The biggest difference to other countries lies in the range of Extremists.

Anthem: Background: After decades of unfair taxation, poor environmental policies, and right-wing theocratic control from Washington, Californians finally said enough with the corrupt politicians who have been destroying the state from 3,000 miles away. A public referendum on secession returned the state to its original status as a free republic. The position of Governor was elevated to President and California divided itself into four states: Northern California, Golden Coast (Central Coast), Yosemite (Central Valley and Sierra Mountains), and Southern California. The national capital of California moved to San Diego from Sacramento after US CIA agents burned the old state capitol building and much of the city in a failed attempt to stop the secession vote. The terrible loss of life in the fire storm caused outrage in Europe which then sent peacekeepers and pressured the US Government to suspend further military action. However, soon after regaining independence, ethnic strife broke out with the Hispanic population demanding California be ceded to Mexico. Hispanic militias took over large portions of Los Angeles and managed to convince Mexico to send troops to conquer California. The newly formed California military was not yet fully operational, however determined local militias from scross Southern California managed to prevent Mexican troops from taking San Diego, but were unable to keep them from advancing north to Los Angeles. Requests for help from the California Government and several unprovoked attacks on European peacekeeping units and civilians led the EU to authorize defensive military action. When faced with overwhelming odds, the Mexican military and Hispanic militias rapidly retreated back to Mexico. In gratitude for European support, California vowed to support the EU, and eventually applied for and gained admittance to the EU as a detached member. With the inclusion of Californian economic and technological might, the EU surpassed US power and shifted global moral, economic, and military authority to Europe. California also recently changed its name to Kalifornia in recognition of exceptionally strong support from Germany (or because someone else took the proper spelling).
